Many times, students believe Biology is all about memorization. However, this is the case. Yes, Biology has a strong memorization component, but it is the application of the principles that make this course difficult.
Students tend to do very well in the knowledge component of High School Biology. Where many students seem to struggle in the Application and Thinking parts of the test.
At Zylor Education, our tutoring center located in Mississauga, we take an application approach to tutoring Biology. Most students can read Biology textbooks and easily understand the concepts, unlike Physics or Math. When we tutor Biology, we teach students to look at what they have learnt, and how it applies to a given problem. For example, the unit on DNA would be related to the mRNA vaccine and how it is helping us fight COVID-19.
The central dogma of biology
The central dogma of biology states that DNA carries genetic instructions that are copied by RNA to produce proteins. In eukaryotic cells, replication and transcription occur within the nucleus, while translation occurs at the cell’s cytoplasm. Processed mRNA travels across the nuclear membrane allowing ribosomes to start the translation process.
At Zylor Education, we teach Biology based on the Ontario curriculum, and approach tutoring the material in a structured manner to ensure that students fully understand the concepts. We are currently teaching online, as our Mississauga center is closed (see below). During every session, we teach students two topics, and focus on the application of the knowledge that they have learnt. Then we assign them homework based on those same concepts. The practice work reinforces the concepts that they learned during the tutoring session.
Biology opens the door to many obvious careers such as Medicine, Pharmacology, Dentistry and so forth. However, we encourage students to look beyond these standard fields and explore careers in vaccine technology, genetics, and DNA manipulation using technologies such as CRISPR. For example, the newest field of mRNA vaccines have come to the forefront due to COVID-19.
When we provide students with the opportunity, knowledge and discipline, we may create the next nobel prize winners “James Watson/Francis Crick” (The DNA molecule exists in the form a three dimensional double helix) or “David Julius/ArdemPatapoutian” (identifying the gene and understanding the mechanism through which our body perceives temperature and pressure).
CALL US FOR UNIVERSITY BIOLOGY TUTORING IF YOU WANT AN A+
It is very important to not wait to start Biology University Tutoring as it is very fast paced and you will very quickly fall behind. The length of a semester in university is actually 3 months (about 13 weeks) and you finish a chapter a week. You will have your first midterm in early October (or early March for the second semester) and there will be 5 midterms, one after the other (since you are taking 5 subjects).
It does not take much to fall behind and then digging yourself out of this hole is very difficult. So, it is best to start tutoring immediately and to do two sessions a week. This will enable you to clear up any misunderstood concepts and you keep up with the hectic pace of university life.
We Tutor all aspects of University Biology such as Biology for Life Sciences, Health Science, Kinesiology etc.
Join our tutoring service if you want to excel in Biology. Call 905-997-0997 ASAP.
